Resumen:
One of the clearest signs of climate change observed in polar regions such as the Western Antarctic Peninsula is accelerated glacial melting caused by temperature increase. Consequently, newly ice-free areas form and glacial meltwater supplies higher amounts of nutrients such as iron into nearby oceans and sediments. In the study site (Potter Cove at King George Island/Isla 25 de Mayo, Antarctica), we studied the effects of this environmental change on microorganisms performing the final steps of organic matter degradation using a representative substrate, acetate, in stable isotope probing incubations.
