Varroa destructoris the ectoparasite of Apis melliferathat causes one of the main problems for beekeeping worldwide. The following review summarizes research related to parasitism, mainly those developed in Latin America. Since the first records of parasitosis to the present, a compilation of the biology, ecology, viruses associated with Varroa, control mechanisms with synthetic acaricides and resistance tothem is presented, as well as the interaction of the mite with bees of African lineage. Finally, the relationship of knowledge in the area with beekeeping activity and current natural control mechanisms is integrated and discussed.
