Resumen:
Determining annual reproductive cycles and reproductive physiology and endocrinology and developing estimates of fecundity, spawning frequency, age at reproduction, and timing of spawning are challenges in fish reproductive biology, aquaculture, and fisheries biology. Yet many facets of gonadal structure are not well understood. Annual changes in the testicular germinal epithelium (GE) have also been used only recently to describe maturation classes in Centropomus undecimalis (Grier and Taylor, 1998). The GE in the teleost ovary has not been well described; the origin of oocytes has been a matter of speculation (Tyler and Sumpter, 1996). In this presentation, the structure of the germinal epithelia of the testis and ovary and the origin of the ovarian follicle from the GE will be described. Definitions applied to biological structure support a unifying, comparative nomenclature between sexes and between taxa.
