Resumen:
We reported the first evidence of the success of BNCT in the treatment of oral cancer employing the hamster cheek pouch model. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of BNCT on the proliferative capacity of precancerous and normal tissue in this model. The data are relevant to potential control of precancerous tissue concomitant with tumor control, and normal tissue tolerance. We evaluated proliferation 1-30 days post- boronophenylalanine-mediated BNCT using incorporation of 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine as an end point. At 30 days BNCT induced a reduction in proliferation of 79 – 87% in precancerous tissue and 22% in normal tissue. BNCT induced a dramatic reduction in the proliferative capacity of precancerous tissue and may thus be of potential use in the control of field cancerized areas around tumors treated with BNCT. The reduction in normal tissue proliferation did not result in histological alterations. Key words: BNCT, oral cancer, precancerous tissue, hamster cheek pouch, proliferation, bromodeoxyuridine
