Resumen:
The emphasis placed on the study of largervertebrates, the complexity in the taphonomic stories of rodents and the lowspecific modifications observed, limited the study of these animals fromPatagonian archaeological sites. In order to advance in the understanding of thesubsistence strategies displayed by hunter-gatherers in Patagonian forests, this research presents the study of rodent bone assemblages recovered in twoarchaeological sites: Paredón Lanfre (SW Río Negro) and Risco de Azócar 1 (NO Chubut). The taphonomic analysis included the estimation of the MNE and MNI, therelative abundance, and the representation of skeletal elements. Heatalteration of bone surface and the presence of cut marks and digestion traceswere also evaluated. Caviomorph rodents dominate the small vertebrate?sassemblages. Thermal alteration patterns and differential representation ofskeletal parts ?over-representation of skull and distal elements of the limb- suggestthat human consumption was the main cause of accumulation of these rodents. Theconsumed species were Galea leucoblephara,Microcavia australis, Ctenomys haigi and possibly also C. sociabilis.
