Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a mitogen factoressential in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. VEGF regulatessurvival, migration and differentiation of vascular endothelium,endocardium and cardiac valves. The vegf-a gene encompasseseight exones that are alternatively spliced to create isoformsdesignated according to their number of amino acids (VEGF120,VEGF144, VEGF164, VEGF189). The aim of this study was toanalize the VEGF isoforms expresión during postnataldevelopment in rat heart. Wistar rat at different postnatal stages:PND0, PND8, PND15, PND30 and PND60 were evaluate. Thefour differents isoforms of VEGF were assayed by semicuantitiveRT-PCR. The VEGF188 isoform was higherthan thother splice variants and increased with age.The VEGF164 isoformexpresión was lower than VEGF188 and no significant changesduring the stages studied were detected. The VEGF144 andVEGF120 isoforms were expressed only during the first week ofdevelopment (P
