Resumen:
Human cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by thelarval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. &ue to the difficulties inachieving treatment success and toxicity of the used compounds, the search of neY therapeutic alternatives such as the use oftraditional medicinal plants has increased. $etamyrcene is oneof the main components of the essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis. The in vitro effects against protoescoleces and cysts of E.granulosus Yere previously demonstrated. The aim of this YorMYas to determine the chemoprophylactic efficacy of Emyrceneagainst E. granulosus. Animal procedures and management protocolsYere approved by the +nstitutional Animal Care and 7seCommittee 4& / of the FCEy0, 70/d2. Forty CF femalemice Yere allocated into groups a Yater control b oil controlc mg/Mg A$< suspension d mg/Mg Emyrcene. TreatmentsYere performed daily during days by intragastric inoculation.Five months after infection, mice Yere euthanized, cysts Yereremoved from the peritoneal cavity and the treatment efficacy Yasevaluated by the mean cysts Yeight, and ultrastructural changesof cysts. The mean Yeight of cysts recovered from mice treatedYith A$< suspension and EmyrceneYere loYer than that obtainedfrom control mice. 0evertheless, no statistical differences Yere found betYeen groups 2.. 0o structural and ultrastructuralchanges Yere observed in cysts obtained from control mice.+n contrast, the ultrastructural study of cysts developed in micetreated Yith A$< suspension and Emyrcene revealed loss of thecharacteristic multicellular structure, shoYing areas Yith loss ofcells and the presence of altered cells. The data obtained demonstratedthat the chemoprophylactic efficacy of Emyrcene against E.granulosusis similar to the effects produced by A$< suspension. Invivo studies to test the clinical efficacy of Emyrceneare currentlybeing undertaMen on the murine model of cystic echinococcosis
