In different research fields some applied studies rely on data of passed events reported by individuals. However, self-reported data has often been found to diverge considerably from data gathered through other means. The most commonly stated reason is in the area of individuals‟ recall or memory problems. This paper shows how the discipline of economics could, at least partially, account for some of the observed discrepancies between reported and actual data when the mechanism is not incentive compatible. The economic analysis is combined with a psychological approach a dual-process model to account for the heterogeneity of individual reactions to incentives.
