Resumen:
My paper analyzes the intersection of colonial notions of ethnorace, gender, and social status in  eighteenth century casta paintings from New Spain. While these types of paintings have been seen as manifestations of criollo pride, they also reflect anxiety over classifying a growing, ethnoracially mixed populations. Moreover, my analysis emphasizes that casta paintings foreshadow some of the discursive and epistemological bases that would prompt the emergence of the concept of mestizaje in the nineteenth century.
