This chapter discusses the design, development, and applications of current three-dimensional (3D) composite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering (BTE) that have the added ability to release therapeutic drugs or growth factors in a controlled manner. This chapter details different approaches used to combine biopolymers and bioceramics in compounds for BTE drug delivery systems and presents an overview of some therapeutic drugs and biomolecules incorporated in them. Particular attention is paid to identify the challenges that lie ahead as well as the unmet needs of both current designs and technologies to develop such multi-functional 3D composite scaffolds for BTE.
