Resumen:
The determination of the threshold for plastic deformation in the collision of nanograins is of interest for nanotechnology and astrophysics applications. Atomistic molecular dynamics was used to simulate the collision of two spherical nanograins, with a crystal face centered cubic (FCC) structure, and plastic activity was quantified by measuring stacking faults, which are the main deformation mode for these grains. A parameter sweep was required to sample the collision space with multiple grain orientations and impact parameters. The simulations were executed in a GPGPU (General Purpose Graphic Processing Units) and HPC (High Performance Computing) environment, to compare their relative computational efficiency. The critical velocity at the plastic threshold was found to decreases with increasing grain radius.
