Resumen:
The Rio Negro floodplain is the habitat of the so-called ?tetras?, small native freshwater fishes that are extremely popular in home aquaria. In this region, more than 50 species of ornamental fish can be found, but a single resource, the cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi, constitutes more than 80% of the total catch. This species is affected by the genus Dermocystidium belongs to the Mesomycetozoea, a phylum of parasites protists. The aim of this study was to analyses the damage the parasites imposes on its hosts examined through evaluation of histological sections.
