Resumen:
A new species of nematode parasite, Philometroidestahieli sp. nov. is described. The juvenile white-mouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri Desmarest, was collected during the spring and summer ofthe years 2008?2010 from estuarial environmentsof Argentina. During investigations of the parasitefauna a nematode encapsulated in the musculatureof the operculum was found. The nematodes wereremoved from the host?s muscle tissue and slide-mounted in lactophenol solution to clarify thespecimens. Opercular muscle with the parasite wasprocessed for histopathological examination. Philo-metroides tahieli sp. nov. can be identified by thelocation of gravid females in the host, presence ofanterior oesophageal bulb, bosses on the surface ofthe body, presence of transversal mounds and 14cephalic papillae in two circular rows. Thepathogenicity of the parasite is low in the naturalenvironment, but lesions are consistent with achronic process. The appearance of caseous necro-sis suggests the presence of a locally acting sub-stance. Philometroides tahieli sp. nov. is the secondspecies of this genera described from brackishwaters, and since the discovery of Philometroide smaplestoni in 1928, is the first species of thisgenus recorded for South America.
