Resumen:
The catalytic performance of Fe/MgO for the combustion of methane was studied using XRD and Raman and Moessbauer spectroscopies. Fe/MgO catalysts consisting of 1.5-9 wt% iron were prepared by impregnation and calcination at 1073 K for 10 hr. The solids were made up of MgFe2O4 spinel clusters, which developed when the iron loading was > 1 wt%, and Fe3+ dispersed in the MgO matrix. The concentrations of MgFe2O4 increased by a factor of 23 while Fe3+ remained almost constant when the iron loading varied between 1.5 and 9 wt%. In the Fe/MgO system, the catalytic activity correlated with the spinel weight fraction. The SEM micrographs and the EPMA analyses of the catalysts indicated that the solid surface was made up of exposed patches of MgFe2O4 and MgO.
