Resumen:
The improvement on the performance and efficiency of medicines is one of the most promising contributions that nanotechnology is able to make, enabling the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies. Among the huge amount of possibilities in the field of nanomedicines, the maintenance and improvement of antibacterial therapeutics is really challenging, owed mainly to the prompt apparition of antibiotic resistance derived from misuse of this kind of medicine. In this context, this chapter is focused on the description of different therapeutic alternatives based on metallic nanoparticles, including general properties, advantages and disadvantages and potential applications. Some remarks regarding future challenges are also discussed.
