Resumen:
The Gastre fault system: e par si muove. The Gastre Fault System (SFG) in central Patagonia is a major shear zone and geological boundary. A review of the characteristics of the SFG system is presented, with emphasis on the paleogeographic hypothesis associated with the early Mesozoic activity that preceded the break-up of Gondwana. On the other side, the episodic reactivation of the SFG during the whole Meso-Cenozoic is well documented, raising severe geological constrains for the feasibility of the Gastre area as a suitable site for a radioactive waste disposal reservoir.
