Sugarcane orange rust, caused by Puccinia kuehnii, can produce yield losses in susceptible cultivars. The first report in the American continent was in Florida (USA) in 2007, followed by reports in the Caribbean and South America. In 2009, it was found in Brazil, so starting in 2010 researchers at Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC) and Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA) began a cooperative project to monitor sugarcane growing regions in Argentina. Annual surveys were conducted from 2010 through 2013 to detect a possible entry of P. kuehnii in the country. Sugarcane fields of Tucumán, Salta, Jujuy, Santa Fe, and Misiones were inspected. Twenty-seven locations in Tucumán were closely evaluated. Samples were analyzed in the field and in the laboratory. Results showed that all of them were negative for the presence of P. kuehnii. Orange rust, a new disease of sugarcane in America, is a potential threat for the sugarcane industry in Argentina. The main control of this disease is through the use of resistant varieties. However, continuous monitoring is considered essential to detect orange rust in a region early enough to allow timely control strategies.
