Resumen:
Two aspects of the ageing process in Latin America should be specially taking into account in order to evaluate future perspectives of morbidity among the elderly in the region: 1) current cohorts of older people in the region have survived to old age largely as a result of improvements in medicine and to a lesser extent due to improvements in living standards; 2) At present there is still a high proportion of the LA population living under poor economic conditions and even those vulnerable individuals are experiencing increasing survival. We aim to analyze the extent to which current levels of poverty in Argentina could affect long-term care needs of older people in the future. Our results show that given currently levels of poverty and the observed relationship between poor early conditions and risk of being disabled among the elderly in Argentina, life expectancy with disability would increase between 10-17% among men and between 28-34% among woman.
