Resumen:
Paleoecological, geological and archaeological studies suggest different environmental and cultural changes during the Holocene in Southern Patagonia. This review compares peat bog and archeological pollen and charcoal records and establishes some hypothetical linkages with the current archeological information for the southwestern Patagonia. During the early Holocene, steppe communities dominated the extra-Andean landscapes. Nothofagus forest colonized the western areas during the early Holocene, then, open forest established up to the early middle Holocene. During the middle Holocene, dense forest suggesting humid conditions characterized Andean landscapes meanwhile the extra-Andean region showed drier conditions than during the early Holocene. The late Holocene showed drier conditions in the Andean region meanwhile steppe environment showed the opposite signal. Vegetation changes at a landscape and local scale were driven by changes in westerlies position and intensity. Extra-Andean archaeological evidences seem to be synchronous with wet periods inferred by mesophytic steppe vegetation dominance. Bloque 1-Oquedad, Chorrillo Malo 2 and Cerro León 3 archaeological sites provides valuable complementary information for paleovegetation and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
