Resumen:
In the first part of
the paper, I will engage with Hobbes?s accounts of deliberation, will and value
to analyze the role of egoistic desires in Hobbes. Following Bernard Gert, I
will argue that Hobbes is not committed to ?psychological egoism? but rather to
?tautological egoism,? i.e. the empty theory that simply states that agents act
on their desires, without opening judgment on the content of these desires as
well as leaving open the way practical conflicts are resolved. In the second
part of the paper, I will argue that Hobbes?s practical philosophy has the
necessary conceptual room to accommodate the standard concept of moral duty or
obligation. In particular, I will argue that Hobbes?s moral theory accommodates
the idea that agents may act with the aim of promoting the interests of others,
and also that it accommodates the idea that agents may be motivated by moral
considerations.
