Resumen:
The Second Vatican Council led to a renewal of the Latin America Catholic Church, and part of this renovation meant assuming what came to be known as ?the preferential option for the poor?. Many religious orders (particularly female ones) began to renew their structures, update the expression of their charisms, and radically change the way they embraced their ministry. Some of them not only moved their houses to where poor people lived, but they also made of working among and for the poor their main ministry. This option meant for many of them a strong renewal that challenged their role both in society and in the Catholic Church. This renewal, even if parallel to a constant decline in the number of religious sisters, had an important impact on the poor communities they lived.
