Resumen:
Water pollution, inadequate management of urban solid waste (MSW) and scarce territorial planning are recurring problems in the management of water basins in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (MABA). In the present work, three case studies were analyzed: water pollution and physical modification of aquatic environments in the Reconquista river basin; the problem of MSW in the town of González Catán (La Matanza, Matanza-Riachuelo river basin) and the environmental status of the Las Piedras stream. In the Reconquista river basin, two clearly differentiated sectors were observed in relation to surface water quality, the upper basin, with low to moderate levels of pollution, and the medium-low basin, with moderate to very high levels. The identification of several open dumps in G. Catán highlights the need for adequate management of MSW that takes into account the vision of the inhabitants of the territory. Las Piedras stream presents a generalized environmental deterioration, related, among other causes, to the lack of territorial planning. It is essential to move towards an integral management of the water basins of the MABA, based on the knowledge and appreciation of the aquatic environments and the services they provide.
