Resumen:
Composting of organic waste generates a liquid by-product known as leachate. Like compost, this liquid is a source of plant nutrients, however, it usually has high salinity and contains phytotoxic substances, characteristics that could limit its use for irrigation. The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of compost leachate on germination and radicle growth in Sesbania virgata, Senna corymbosa and Vachellia caven (Fabaceae) plant species. Three germination bioassays were performed in which different dilutions of leachate (treatments 5%, 10% and 25%) and pure leachate (100% treatment) were used, in addition to distilled water as a control. Leachate inhibited germination and growth only in the case of S. virgata during the first days of the process, when it was used in dilutions greater than 10%. However, this inhibition was temporary. In the remaining species, no statistically significant differences were observed between treatments (p > 0.05). Irrigation is a possible alternative use for compost leachate, recommending the use of low dilutions (up to 10%) in order to limit possible effects on sensitive species and on the quality of the substrates.
