Search for stellar clouds associated with the TeV gamma-ray emission detected towards the remnant of SN1006

We report on a study of the interstellar medium around the SN1006 in connection with the TeV -radiation detected towards the NE rim of the remnant. In order to discern the origin of the observed TeV radiation we have searched for dense interstellar clouds. The analysis of the 21cm HI line distribution around SN1006 shows that the surrounding medium is generally homogeneous, with an average atomic density of the order of 0.3 cm–3. Based on morphological correspondences between the HI distribution and multiwavelength features of the SNR, a kinematical distance shorter than 1 kpc is suggested for SN1006. A search for small interstellar molecular clouds in the direction of the -ray detection, was also conducted. The preliminary results are negative.
