Resumen:
Socio-economic residential segregation(SES) is a common feature of almost all Argentinean cities, neatly divided intopoor, middle-class and affluent neighborhoods. At the end of the 1980s andespecially over the 1990s, the process of suburbanization for affluent andupper-middle-class groups was consolidated as a generalized model. This studywill concentrate on the trends and the patterns of SES in Buenos Aires, and willfocus on two major dimensions of segregation: the spatial concentrationpatterns of a given social group in specific areas and the degree of socialhomogeneity within such areas. SES will be described using the highest level ofeducation that a householder has completed as a proxy for socio-economicstatus. The indices of segregation and dissimilarity will be used as the mainmeasure to compare level and changes of SES but other metrics ? such as LocationQuotient?s index ? will be also used to estimate the degree of homogeneity orheterogeneity in neighboring areas. This study will use population andhousehold census data from 1991, 2001, and 2010 provided by the NationalInstitute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), and the data will be presented atthe spatial disaggregation level of block groups called ?radios censales?. This study will provide comparable data on thelevels of socio-economic segregation in Buenos Aires based on information ofthe three last censuses and it relation to income inequality.
