Resumen:
The Genoa Valley, located in extra-Andean
central western Chubut Province (Argentina) is a
notable located since the Genoa River creates
one of the biggest wetlands (mallines) in
Patagonia. Mallines account for only 4% of
Patagonia. Grassland production is 20?30 times
higher than on the the arid plateau (meseta)
Mallines are an important attractor of people in
extra-Andean Patagonia given their importance
in autochthonous and introduced terrestrial and
aquatic species.
In this present, we present the current state of
research in the Genoa valley, an archaeologically
unknown area before our team began research
in 2011. Our focus is the area around the town of
José de San Martin that connects the Genoa
Valley, which is a north?south corridor, with the
corridor between the meseta and the Andes
(along the Pico Valley), both in historical and prehistorical
times.
