Resumen:
ABSTRACT   We report a comparative analysis of Cd uptake and induction of metallothioneins (Mts) in embryos and adult Bufo arenarum liver. In embryos exposed to increasing Cd concentrations up to 0.046 mg/L during 10 days, the uptake reaches 7µgCd/g embryo w/w. Three different Mts were detected with HPLC; the most inducible Mt isoform increased 7.8 times respect to control value binding 84% of Mts  related Cd. In the liver of adult animals the same isoform increased 24 times binding in this case 74% of the metal.  Two other inducible Mt isoforms were detected but they were significantly less inducible by Cd and bind this metal with lower affinity. It is noteworthy that these last Mts were found in mammals, indicating, from an evolutionary perspective, a high conservation of these isoforms.
