Resumen:
Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) loaded tomontmorillonites (Mt) or organomontmorillonites(OMt) generates a functional material that can be incorporatedto several systems (polymers, paints, etc) as acontrolled release bactericide. Understanding the BACadsorption sites on these adsorbents is of high importanceto clarify their adsorption/desorption characteristics inaqueous media or other solvents. In this work, a thoroughstudy about the adsorption/desorption properties of Mtand OMt with regards to BAC is presented, in order toevaluate further BAC release with the consequent aquaticenvironment contamination. In this work, the BAC adsorptionon two different sites is demonstrated: the interlayerspace and the external surface. Depending on BACconcentration inwater, sorption of BAC atMt occurred intwo steps. At adsorbed amount 0.5 mmol g−1,there was a new interlayer expansion attaining 0.75 nmand the external charge shifted to positive value. In thecase of OMt, the introduction of BAC produced changesin the interlayer structure and in the external surfacecharge. BAC desorption was strongly dependent on thetype of Mt or OMt and extraction solvent, knowledge ofwhich will allow its safe use in environmental friendlytechnological applications
