Resumen:
One of the most outstanding aspects of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is its unique ability to perform depth profile analysis at real time, facilitating the identification of layers composition in coatings of different thickness. Surface coatings can be originated in artificial treatments carried out to modify properties and to improve the quality of materials, or being consequence of natural processes. The knowledge of the coating composition is a problem of great importance in many fields as industry, materials science or archaeology, among others. In this work we study the composition of layered coatings of car bearings by using LIBS. The samples were ablated by using successive nanosecond laser pulses of a Nd:YAG at 1064 nm. Two types of systems were used for detection and analysis of the emission of the plasma formed. On one hand, an Echelle spectrometer and a CCD camera that allows identifying several elements at the same time. On the other hand we used a Czerny-Turner spectrograph with a gated intensified CCD camera to perform studies of the temporal evolution of the spectral lines. Layer changes were also characterized by measuring the intensity of the acoustic wave generated during the ablation process.
