Variables such as depth, sea surface temperature, salinity, distance from shore, and primary productivity are often used to describe habitat use patterns in cetaceans, but these variables may or may not be directly responsible for the patterns. Daily habitat use patterns of dusky dolphins are at least partly linked to their prey, but probably also to the threat of predation. Although social reasons are probably also important.
