Resumen:
AbstractThe influence of cerium on the catalytic properties of Co based materials in the ethanol steam reforming reaction was studied by varying the CeO2 loading between 5 and 50 wt.% in the binary support CeO2-SiO2. The Co3O4 spinel and the CeO2 fluorite cubic phase were the only crystalline species observed by XRD. TPR experiments revealed that total volumetric reduction for cobalt was achieved at temperatures below 500 °C and also determined the existence of a metal-support interaction. This interaction was confirmed by TEM in the Co/Ce(10)-Si catalyst, as well as particles sizes of Co and Ce species around 15 and 8 nm, respectively. Catalytic measurements showed that materials with a content greater or equal to 10 wt.% CeO2 were stable and selective to H2, exhibiting less carbon deposition, compared to the Co/Ce(5)-Si solid. The Co/Ce(10)-Si catalyst was evaluated in a membrane reactor, obtaining a higher H2 production, in comparison to the conventional flow reactor, due to the displacement of hydrogen producing reactions. Operating at the highest W/F and a sweep gas ratio of 72, a 55% of H2 recovery was obtained in a by-products free stream.
