Passive Optical Networks (PONs) represent a stepforward in “first mile” networks; in perspective they are oftenconsidered as the solution to the access network bottleneckproblem. By using optical technologies, PONs can transfer alarge amount of data, and by being completely passive, theyreduce management costs and failure probabilities. The accessnetwork is logically a point-to-multipoint network, whereas on thephysical side different topologies can be used such as trees, buses,stars, rings. The tree topology emerged as the winning solution;however, it naturally lacks protection capability and requireslocal traffic to be processed by the Optical Line Terminal. Inthis paper, we present WONDER, a novel PON architecturebased on a folded bus topology, which offers fault resilience andefficient local traffic support. We compare WONDER characteristics,performance, strengths and weaknesses with classical PONarchitectures and we show that WONDER provides interestingfeatures.
