Resumen:
From an historical perspective, much of the interest in chemical modificationof surfaces originated from their importance to different technologies, namelywetting, adhesion, catalysis, lubrication, detergency, biocompatibility, corrosion,or colloidal stabilization, among other examples.1?3During the early years, when sophisticated spectroscopies working underultrahigh vacuum conditions were developed, the central interest of surfacescience was especially focused on unraveling the atomic and electronicstructures of metals, metal oxides, and semiconducting surfaces (usually assingle crystals). However, by the end of past century, with the advent of newchemical techniques to integrate functions on solid substrates, surface sciencestarted to look at organic surfaces as ideal partners to address emerging andchallenging issues on the technological agenda, for example, in relation to thedevelopment of antifouling biocompatible coatings for biomedical devices orthe rational design of antifogging coatings with frost-resisting capabilities forthe automotive industry.
