Resumen:
In the course of the nineteenth century, the world map as a genre of cartographical representation covering the entire surface of the earth was redefined due to scientific innovations, the development of national scientific institutions, and new conceptions of maps themselves. Two general changes common to all sciences accompanied this process in the cartographic field and map production: the over valorization of accuracy (subsequently, the creation of new instruments and the repetition of measurements once and again to correct maps) and the need for a common scientific language which led to the homogenization of signs, symbols, lettering, coordinate systems, etc. (Godlewska, 1999: 39-48).
