This study offers the first English edition
of Karl Kautskys 1912 preface to Giuseppe Salvioli's book Capitalism in the
Ancient World: Studies on the Economic History of Rome, collating it with
the relevant items from Kautskys scholarshipparticularly his review of the
German translation of Ettore Ciccotti's The Decline of Slavery in the
Ancient World, which had been published eight months earlier in Die Neue
Zeit, the theoretical journal of the German Social Democratic Party. Kautskys
observations on the economic history of antiquity focused on the connections
between the distinctiveness of historically specific modes of production, their
forms of property and propertylessness, and the links between production for
consumption and for exchange, plus the resulting patterns both of the social
relations and the forces of production and of surplus appropriation licensed
thereby. For Kautsky, the value of understanding the economic conditions
preceding capitalism is that it highlights both the historical specificity of
capitalism itself, and thus also the reasons for its transcendence.
