Resumen:
The pathogenesisofchronicchagasiccardiopathyisstillunderdiscussion;thereiscon- siderable evidencethatinflammatoryinfiltratesandtheirmediatorshaveadirecteffect on cardiaccells.Herewestudiedthestructureandfunctionofcardiacmitochondriain chronic chagasicmyocardiopathy.Cardiacmitochondrialstructureandenzymeactivity of citratesynthaseandcomplexesItoIVoftherespiratorychainwerestudiedinalbino Swiss miceinfectedwith Trypanosoma cruzi (Tulahuen strainorSGOZ12isolate)on365 days post-infection(dpi).Thepresenceofparasitesincardiacandskeletalmusclewasalso investigated. TheactivityofcomplexesItoIVwasalteredindifferentways, accordingto the strainemployed(P <0.0001),inrelationtothecristaedisorganisationandtheparasite persistence foundintheTulahuengroup, andthechronicinflammatoryprocessdescribed in bothgroups;citratesynthaseactivityalsoincreasedinbothinfectedgroups.Changesin mitochondrial structureweredetectedin89%ofTulahuen-and58%ofSGOZ12-infected mice. Inthispaperwedemonstratethatparasitepersistenceandinflammationarelikelyto be involvedinthestructuralandfunctionalalterationsincardiacmitochondriafromchron- ically T. cruzi-infected mice, demonstratingthattheparasitestraindeterminesdifferent mitochondrial changesinchagasiccardiopathy.
