Resumen:
In this paper, a decoder for Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes is proposed. The system employs a geneticalgorithm (GA) aided by syndrome weight selection and distancelogic. Genetic algorithms were chosen due to their capabilityto perform heuristic searches using evolution-based convergencewhile also exploring wide spaces. The paper has consideredthe performance of the decoder over an impulse noise channel, typical to power line communications, and a type of disturbancecommonly found in most transmission mediums and devices. Theresulting system is shown to perform as well as the standard sumproductdecoder, with the additional advantage of not requiringknowledge of the channel information (noise type or power).A parallel decoding topology is proposed, where error rateperformance can be improved by the addition of concurrentgenetic algorithm decoders. Furthermore, this scheme allows forgenetic algorithm complexity to be reduced, as the addition ofparallel blocks can compensate the individual loss in error rateperformance.
