Resumen:
Argentina, as one of the biggest oilseeds producers in the world, has a production volume enough to satisfy the internal vegetable oil demand as food and as a possible source of energy.Nevertheless, when seeking alternative raw materials for biodiesel production that does not compete with the food demand, many attractive alternatives arise due to its availability and/or their low cost. This is the case of the used frying oil. However, because of their composition and the moisture presence, some of these oils may need a pretreatment. In this work, a solid catalyst based on 10% by weight of sodium oxide supported on SBA-15, was employed in the transesterification of different oily substrates (commercial sunflower and soybean oil, and waste frying oil) with absolute methanol. In the pre-established reaction conditions (2 wt% catalyst charge, 14:1 methanol to oil molar ratio, 60 °C, vigorous magnetic stirring and 5 h of reaction), an ~85 wt% biodiesel was obtained. Subsequently, the catalyst concentration was doubled, obtaining ~82% by weight of biodiesel with the used cooking oil.
