Resumen:
The chemical composition of a landfill leachate depends on the age of the landfill, climatic conditions and the rate of degradation of solid waste. Ammonium is one of the main pollutants of leachate due to the anaerobic degradation of organic matter. Vertical wetlands have a high capacity to oxidize ammonium due to the presence of oxygen in the filter media. The temperature and the hydraulic load are factors that influence the nitrogen removal (Hill & Payton, 1998; Mietto 2015). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydraulic loading on the efficiency of ammonium removal in vertical wetlands for the treatment of landfill leachate.
