Drought stress is a factor that affects morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular plant attributes with adverse impact on plant productivity. Nicotiana tabacum transgenic plants expressing maize non photosynthetic NADP-ME in guard and companion cells under KAT1 promoter had shown enhanced water use efficiency, earlier flowering and shorter life cycle under normal conditions. Also, these lines exhibit reduced stomatal aperture, increased sugar export from leaves and increased net CO2 fixation rate
