Resumen:
The deliberative democracy of Jürgen Habermas, based on the presuppositions of the theory of discourse, it is characterized because of its adoption of a reconstructive sense of the presuppositions of the institutional design of democracy, which it is inherent into the universal pretensions of validity of its theoretical proposal. Taking into account this reconstructive sense, this work tries to make explicit the importance of the exercise of criticism by the citizenries, which in turn expresses some of the presuppositions of the republican tradition that deliberative democracy incorporates in its theoretical framework (along with some of the presuppositions of the liberal tradition). The idea is to justify (part of) the contributions that the mentioned political theory can make to improve the institutional quality of the democratic rule of law.
