Resumen:
Nitrate pollution of drinking water sources is widespread in Buenos Aires Province. Its main causes are agriculture, livestock farming, or the poor design and operation of septic systems. High nitrate concentration in drinking water isdetrimental for human health, for this reason, standards have been set for this ion. Biological denitrification, carriedout ex-situ by bacteria indigenous to the aquifer, has been shown to be a suitable form of treatment for water forhuman consumption. The objective of the project described here was to establish the local conditions for theconfiguration of a biological denitrification pilot plant for groundwater in the province of Buenos Aires. For thispurpose, laboratory tests were carried out in a batch and two semi-continuous systems, including a 10X pre-scaling.The results obtained allowed the design and implementation of the proposed pilot plant, which is currently in thetesting phase.
