What does fieldwork contribute to the discussion on participation in social research?

When we purport to discuss participation in social research, various related possibilities and objectives come forth. We thereby talk about different degrees of participation and participatory research: from the most comprehensive, which advocates for the empowerment of participating subjects, co-theorization, co-conceptualization and co-analysis, to more modest investigations in which the concept is implemented in sporadic phases of the study. From a position closer to the later, based on our experience in the field of migration studies, we intend to reflect on the processes of interaction, negotiation, and participation during the fieldwork stage.
