Resumen:
Research in the field of the catalytic oxidation of sulfides is promoted due to several reasons: (a) the synthesis of different chemically and biologically important molecules and (b) the removal of sulfur from industrial products and wastes, in order to comply with environmental legislations [1]. The oxidation of 2-(methylthio)benzothiazole was chosen as model reaction for this study since this substrate is used in distinct industrial processes and the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone are more biodegradable than the substrate. An important challenge in this respect is to make this process environmentally friendly, by strategies such as using nontoxic solvents, green oxidants and energy-efficient catalytic methods. In this regard, hydrogen peroxide as cheap and environmentally friendly oxidant which only produce water and oxygen as side products is an attractive oxidant for oxidation of organic compounds [2]. To promote the oxidant efficiency, modified ZSM-5 zeolites were evaluated as catalysts for sulphide oxidation.
