Resumen:
A six-month monitoring study in river Ardas basin, North Evros, showed pesticide residues in groundwater of this region. The target compounds were the herbicides metolachlor, terbuthylazine, atrazine and its metabolites DIA, DEA and HA. In past, in this region and in North Greece these compounds were frequently detected. The properties of soil in this region facilitate pesticide leaching and preferential flow. Also, many studies in Europe showed pesticides residues including target compounds in groundwater samples. The presence of pesticide residues in groundwater is considered to be risky for human and environment. So, European Union enacted as the maximum permissible limit of pesticide concentration 0.1 μg/L in each sample. Five drinking water, two irrigation wells and four experimental boreholes were monitored. These wells and boreholes are closed to villages Arzos, Fylakio, Plati, Keramos, Elia, Kastanies and Rizia. The overall amount of samples was fifty-four. The samples were prepared using solid-phase extraction. The flow was 5 ml/min. The samples were eluted by 7 ml methanol and 3 ml ethyl acetate and then were dried up. The analysis was conducted by a HPLC/DAD. The HPLC elution was on gradient conditions and the analytical method was consisted of water and acetonitrile. The flow rate was 0.8 ml/min. For every compound the LODs were fluctuated from 0.001 to 0.005 μg/L and LOQs from 0.01 to 0.05 μg/L. The recoveries were detected over 76%. Although, the EU banned atrazine and metolachlor, were detected frequently and their concentrations in some cases were over the maximum permissible limit.
