Jaime Bernstein was the son of Ukrainian Jewimmigrants who arrived to Argentina in the earlyyears of the twentieth century. In 1937, he began amajor in pedagogy at the Facultad de Filosofía yLetras (School of Philosophy and Literature) ofthe Universidad de Buenos Aires (University ofBuenos Aires, UBA) where he graduated in 1942(honors diploma) with a dissertation on “AdlerianPsychology and Education.” Before graduation,between 1941 and 1942, he had been a member ofthe Sigmund Freud Institute, founded by BelaSzékely (1882–1955), a Hungarian psychologistspecialized in the ideas of Alfred Adler and in thetheory and the application of mental tests. Whilehe was doing his training with Székely, in that institution, Bernstein became deputy head of thepedagogic section, where he gave courses on theRorschach test and on child intelligence. He alsostarted a clinical activity with pedagogic orientation.In 1952, he took a study trip to England,France, Italy, and Spain.
