Milanesi*Instituto de Ciencias Biológicas y Biomédicas de Sur (INBIOSUR)-UNS-CONICET, BahíaBlanca, ArgentinaAbstract: Mitochondrial localization of estrogen and androgen receptors andhormone-responsive elements (EREs) was reported in different cell lines and indicatedthat these steroid hormones have specific actions on the mitochondrial gene expressionand functions. Both steroids act through a complex molecular mechanism that involvescrosstalk between plasma membrane, mitochondria and nucleus. One of the results ofthese interactions is mitochondrial protection. Here, we discuss studies that describe theestrogen- and
