Resumen:
A wide variety of pesticides is used on agricultural crops to control various insects. In spite of their benefits, pesticides are often considered a serious threat because of their long environmental persistence. Therefore, the removal of pesticides from the environment, or their transformation into less toxic compounds, is a topic of research interest worldwide. For a long time, organochlorine pesticides (OPs) were widely used in agriculture and medicine; however, the use of these compounds is now prohibited on account of their toxicity, environmental persistence, and bioaccumulation throughout the food chain (Abhilash 2009). Thus in 2009, OPs were added to the UNEP Stockholm Convention list as new persistent organic pollutants (Vijgen et al. 2011).
