Resumen:
We describe a lower tribosphenic molar of a new mammal recently recovered from the earliest known, mammal-bearing Paleocene strata in western Patagonia. The specimen constitutes the oldest unequivocal South American record of an immigrant therian mammal. Its advanced features supports hypotheses favoring the Cretaceous presence of these Laurasian immigrants in South America, as a member of either the marsupial or placental radiations so characteristic of the South American Cenozoic record. The Lefipán specimen and site would be key in understanding the initial radiation of South American Cenozoic therian mammals.
