Archaeology of the Architecture and Production in Sugar-Cane Industrial Contexts. Technological and Productive Changes in the Ingenio Lastenia Site (Tucumán, Argentina) during the 19th and 20th Centuries

In industrial archaeological sites, architectural constructions are a fundamental piece ofthe intervening technical systems in productive processes, as in the case of machinery.At the same time, the archaeological study of these systems can provide informationabout the socio-cultural transformations linked to these technological changes. Thearchaeological analysis of architectural structures is combined with the study ofdocumental sources in this paper, to analyze the evolution of technical systems in thesugar factory of Ingenio Lastenia (Tucumán, Argentina) between 1880 and 1922.As a result, first of all, a chronological-constructive sequence was defined for theproduction unit, and a record was established of the various materials used in thefactory buildings during different periods. Secondly, links were established betweenarchitecture and production. Based on this, industrial-sugar architecture wasunderstood as one of how industrial capitalism manifested itself materially in theNorthwest of Argentina towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the20th century.
